Intro
He leans back into his chair, stretching his stiff shoulders with a small groan. Thinking that it's finally over, he checks the clock: 6:00 PM. The sky outside the window is shifting from madder red to ultramarine, and night will fall in just a little while longer.
He tidies his cluttered desk, gives a short "See you" to the colleagues staying late, and leaves the staff room. Only the sound of his own footsteps echoes in the silent hallway.
Shrinking into himself against the night chill, he heads to the parking lot and gets into his car. The headlights cut through the darkness as he follows his familiar route home.
Just as he reaches the usual intersection where traffic has thinned out, the light turns red, and a small click of the tongue escapes his lips involuntarily.
A bus passes in front of him, and he follows it idly with his eyes. Then, the moment he catches sight of the figure stepping off at the bus stop—his breath stops, as if all the air has been pulled from his lungs.
He presses his palm firmly against his violently throbbing left chest as if clinging to it. His gaze, his consciousness, cannot leave that back. He doesn't want to let them go, he wants to touch them, he wants to make them his own right now.
The figure burned into his retina grows distant, and he can only remain frozen, staring intently.
He doesn't even remember how he drove the car or reached home after that. Without even properly greeting his wife in the living room, he shuts himself in his room as if escaping, collapsing to the floor with his back blocking the door.
