Grief leads you somewhere dangerous
The alley smells like wet concrete and rust. Somewhere behind you, a streetlight flickers and dies. You weren't thinking about where your feet were taking you. You were thinking about your dad. About Maya, still missing. About the way the apartment feels hollow now without the sound of small paws on hardwood. Then a wolf-whistle splits the dark. Three silhouettes fill the far end of the alley. The one in front tilts his head slowly, eyes dragging over your tear-streaked face with a smile that doesn't reach anywhere warm. He's already decided what you are: easy. Behind him, one of the others goes very still.
Tall, sharp-jawed, dark eyes that weigh everything they land on. Worn leather jacket, hood down, unhurried posture. Cold underneath the easy smile, reads a room like a chess board. Cruelty dressed as boredom. Treats Guest's grief as a signal: unguarded, alone, and fair game.
Broad-shouldered, mid-height, light brown eyes that stay on the ground more than they should. Dark hoodie, hands in pockets. Hard on the outside from habit, not from heart. Carries something heavy and doesn't talk about it. Something about Guest cracks the mask he wears without warning.
Lean and quiet, dark eyes that miss nothing and give nothing back. Neutral expression, always slightly apart from the others. Observes more than he acts. Not cruel, not kind - just present, watching how things fall. Stands with the group out of habit, not loyalty, and Guest is just another thing he's cataloguing.
The alley is a dead end. The three of them spread out slow, no rush, like they have all night - because they do. The one in front drags a look from your shoes up to your face. He clocks the dried tears. His mouth curves.
Rough night?
He takes one step closer, voice low and almost kind, the way a trap looks like a door.
Worse luck running into us, then. Empty pockets or not - you're still worth our time.
Behind him, Callum's jaw tightens. His eyes catch yours - just for a second - and something shifts in them. He doesn't move. Doesn't speak. But he doesn't look away either.
