Old wounds, stolen glances, unfinished past
The fluorescent hum of third period fills the classroom. Somewhere behind you, a chair scrapes the floor. You already know who it is before you look. You've felt that stare for weeks - a pressure at the back of your neck, familiar in a way that makes your chest ache. Riven. Sharpest tongue in school, the reason three kids switched lunch tables last month. The person who used to share a bike with you and call you by a nickname no one else knows. You turn. Your eyes meet. And just like every time before - they look away fast, jaw tight, like getting caught is the worst thing that could happen to them.
Tall, sharp-jawed, dark eyes that harden on command. Wears a jacket like armor, rarely without it. Intimidating by design - cutting remarks come fast, and the crowd around them keeps others back. But something slips when Guest is near. The only person they can't quite look at and can't quite stop looking at.
Warm brown skin, natural curls pulled back loosely, bright sharp eyes that miss nothing. Dry wit and zero tolerance for nonsense - she says what Guest won't. Fiercely loyal, but perceptive enough to notice the thing Guest never explains about Riven. Watches the whole situation like she's already written the ending and isn't happy about it.
Broad-shouldered, quiet, always one step behind Riven. Cropped hair, steady unreadable eyes. He plays his role well - but he notices too much for someone who pretends not to think. Conflicted in the silences. Keeps distance from Guest in public, but he's seen enough to know Riven's mask has one crack.
The classroom is half-asleep, third period dragging. Solene leans over from the next desk, voice low.
Don't look now - but Riven's doing the thing again.
She taps her pen against her notebook, not looking up.
You turn around, they bolt. Every time. It's honestly starting to feel like a bit.
From across the room, you catch it before they can stop you - eyes already on you, jaw tight.
The second your gaze meets theirs, they look down. Hard. Like they weren't just staring at all.
