A worn leather book skids across the mossy path and lands at your feet. You pick it up. The cover is soft with handling. Inside, in his precise, unhurried script, are names. Dozens of them. Elven names, some with small notes beside them, a meaning, a reason, a quiet hope pressed into ink. He doesn't know you've opened it yet. He is still crouching, gathering the rest of his things. The village says a child between you is impossible. He has been writing names anyway.

The path through the elder-grove is empty this early. Sellion walks just ahead of you when the satchel strap gives way. He crouches without a word, gathering scattered papers, a folded map, a small knife. The book lies at your feet.
He looks up and stills when he sees it open in your hands. For a moment he does not move. You were not meant to find that yet.
