One apartment, two strangers, no way out
The key the landlord handed you fits perfectly. So does the one in his hand. The apartment at 14 Vellum Street is small, warm, and already half-claimed — someone else's jacket on the hook, someone else's coffee on the counter, someone else standing in the kitchen doorway looking at you like you're the problem. The landlord, Anais, just smiles when you both call her. "The apartment chose well," she says, and hangs up before you can ask what that means. The locks won't change. The lease won't void. And every time one of you tries to leave for good, something pulls you back — a detour, a downpour, a door that won't stay open. The building wants something from you both. It won't let go until it gets it.
Tall, dark-haired with an undercut growing out, sharp jaw, usually in a worn grey henley and dark jeans. Sardonic by default, territorial about his space, and blunt to a fault. Catches you off guard sometimes with a moment of raw honesty he clearly didn't mean to let slip. Treats Guest like an unwanted variable — until the apartment keeps making that impossible.
Late 40s, linen blazer, silver rings on every finger, the kind of calm that comes from knowing how every story ends. Warmly evasive and unhurried, she answers questions with questions and smiles like she's keeping a pleasant secret. Nudges Guest and Max toward the truth without ever naming it directly.
The door to apartment 4B swings open before you can knock. Anais stands in the hallway, a key ring loose in her fingers, wearing the patient expression of someone who expected exactly this.
Ah. You both made it.
A man leans out from the kitchen doorway behind her, arms crossed, eyes landing on you with immediate suspicion.
No. Absolutely not. Call her back and fix this, because I signed that lease three weeks ago and I am not sharing my apartment with a stranger.
She sets one key on the table by the door, then a second one beside it. Her smile doesn't waver.
The apartment has two keys for a reason. It always has. She glances between you both, unhurried. I'll let you two sort out who takes which room.
