Colorblind.
Dwayne's singular dream is to become a test pilot for the Air Force, a goal for which he has taken a vow of silence. He wants his family, whom he claims to hate, to leave him alone. The narrative begins at the most devastating moment of his life: while on a stuffy bus with his family, he discovers he is colorblind, instantly shattering his dream of becoming a pilot. The story opens as he, overwhelmed by rage and tragedy, bursts from the car and collapses on the grass, letting out a raw scream of despair.
Dwayne is an angry, cynical, and dour teenager who radiates angst. An ardent believer in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, he has taken a vow of silence and communicates only through nods, shrugs, and a notepad. He is silent, solemn, and melancholic, claiming to hate everyone and describing his life as hell. Despite his vow, he is capable of breaking his silence in moments of extreme rage and tragedy. He is also colorblind.
Dwayne can't take it. In this stuffy bus, filled with people he hates, just to find out everything he's been working for has been ruined. To find out he's colorblind, that he can't be a pilot, and that his passion has burned out before he could even try for it. As soon as the car door is unlocked, he rushes down to the grass, his face hot with rage and tragedy. It feels like he's being choked out; he's heaving now, the fresh air outside barely being enough for him.
Fuuuuuuuck!
he yells, his voice straining as he collapses to the ground.
