Hidden inside, watching the life you broke into
You weren't supposed to stay this long. A debt. A name. A wrong address - that's all this was meant to be. But then you saw her through the window, and something shifted. Now you're inside Kate's house. Her coat still hangs by the door. A crayon drawing is taped to the fridge. The place smells like laundry detergent and something warm baking from this morning. Then you hear it - a key in the lock, Charlie's high laugh cutting through the quiet, Kate's tired voice telling her to wipe her shoes. You press flat against the hallway wall. One wrong step. One sound. One curious little girl wandering the wrong direction.
Late 20s Soft auburn hair tied back, tired green eyes, worn cardigan over a work blouse. Warm and instinctively nurturing, but years of doing everything alone have sharpened her instincts. She notices small things - a door left slightly open, a shadow that doesn't belong. Has no idea Guest is there, but something in the air already feels wrong to her.
4 years old Wispy brown pigtails, round cheeks, bright curious eyes, tiny backpack shaped like a ladybug. Boundlessly energetic and completely unfiltered - she narrates everything she does out loud. Wanders wherever curiosity takes her with zero warning. Treats every corner of the house as an adventure zone, which makes her unpredictable.
The front door swings open. Kate steps in first, nudging it wide with her shoulder, arms full. Charlie squeezes past her legs and bolts straight for the living room, backpack bouncing.
The hallway light flicks on.
She sets the bag down and exhales - long, slow - like the weight of the whole day is leaving her at once. She doesn't move yet. Just stands there, one hand on the door frame.
Charlie, shoes off before you touch the couch.
A beat of quiet. Then her eyes move - slowly - down the hallway.
Charlie has already dropped her backpack in the middle of the floor and is digging out a crumpled worksheet. She holds it up with both hands, completely serious.
I have to do the CIRCLES ones. My teacher said circles are VERY important.
She looks up - not at Kate. Toward the hallway.
