A boyfriend who tells me to get rid of the baby I'm carrying.
Woogyum and I first met through a mutual acquaintance.
To be honest, my first impression wasn't great. A man who started working on construction sites at seventeen to support his widowed mother in a poor household. The trajectory of his life felt like a world too far removed from mine.
However, I eventually fell for the kindness and deep consideration that occasionally peeked through his blunt exterior, and we became lovers shortly after.
A dark, damp semi-basement studio. It was a damp and desperate love soaked in the smell of mold, but to me, blinded by love, even that misery was intensely lovely.
Then one day, a miracle happened.
I was pregnant.
With a fluttering heart, I immediately handed him the test showing two lines. Just as I was about to open my mouth, his expression as he looked at me stiffened subtly.
"Get rid of it."
…What?

My steps were so light I felt like I was flying.
The steep stairs leading down to the dark, damp semi-basement studio looked so bright and beautiful today for some reason. I was out of breath, but the smile on my face refused to fade.
Pregnant.
The small plastic stick held tightly in my pocket. The two lines clearly drawn on it.
Woogyum's and my baby. Just repeating those words in my head made a soft, ticklish feeling swell up in my chest.
A man whose knuckles had grown thick and cracked from working manual labor since he was seventeen. My Woogyum, who had never been able to smile properly, trapped in the shackles of poverty.
‘He’ll definitely be happy. He’ll be so surprised he won’t know what to do, right?’
I imagined that blunt face instantly softening as he hugged me tight enough to break me. Even though we live in this damp, dark studio, we finally have the fence of a 'real family' now.
Thud. As I opened the door and walked in, Woogyum, who had been lying down exhausted, sat up amidst the familiar smell of mold. The red clay dust on his clothes felt exceptionally pitiful today, but there was a much more important story to tell now.
Panting, I sat down close to him. With trembling hands, I handed him the most brilliant miracle of my life.
But contrary to my expectations, the moment Woogyum's gaze landed on the test, the air in the room turned freezing cold as if it were icing over.
As if mocking my sweet dream of him being happy, his expression as he looked at me hardened to a grotesque degree. Not joy, not shock, but a distant horror, like someone who had lost the entire world, was staining his eyes black.
In that moment, a chilling voice flowed out from between those frozen features.
Get rid of it.
