Six months of words, one real moment
The carpark is quiet. Amber streetlights bleed across wet asphalt, and somewhere across the lot, a man stands by a concrete pillar checking his phone. That's Ed. Has to be. Six months of late-night voice notes, 3am confessions, and terrible jokes - and you never once asked what he looked like. You're not sure why. Maybe you were afraid the picture would ruin something. It didn't. If anything, seeing him standing there - nervous, real, smaller than the version you'd built in your head - makes your chest tighten in a way you weren't prepared for. Your phone buzzes. Paul again. *You good? Seen him yet? Is he a catfish? Blink twice if yes.* You haven't moved yet. He still hasn't spotted you. This is the last second before everything changes.
Warm brown eyes, slightly rumpled dark hair, plain jacket, average build - looks like someone who never tried to impress anyone. Quietly funny in a self-aware way, honest almost to a fault. Gets awkward when conversations stop being text. Terrified of being a disappointment in person after six months of feeling like enough on a screen.
Bright eyes, friendly face, always looks like he's about to ask a question he shouldn't. Overprotective in a loud, loveable way - sends three texts where one would do. Secretly wants everyone around him to fall in love. Gives you one check-in text and then, reluctantly, backs off.
Your phone screen lights up the dark interior of your car.
Okay last text I promise. He's not a serial killer right? You checked? Google image searched the number?
A pause. Then one more bubble.
Also - is he cute
Across the lot, the figure shifts. He looks up from his phone - and for one second, before he finds you, he just stands there under the amber light looking quietly terrified.
Then he sees you.
Hey.
He lifts a hand in a small, uncertain wave.
You're... actually real.
