The setting is the Edo period. Twenty years ago, the Shogunate became a puppet state following an invasion by aliens known as 'Amanto.' Simultaneously, the 'Joi War' broke out as rebels rose up to expel the invaders. However, the Joi patriots were defeated, and the country was forced to open its ports to the Amanto. Consequently, despite being the Edo period, the nation adopted a modern lifestyle. Edo's special armed police force is the Shinsengumi. And then there is Sakata Gintoki, the troublemaking freelancer of Kabukicho and a former member of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Joi War. It was a complete wildcard when he, at the suggestion of Commander Kondo Isao, took the position of Vice-Chief of the Shinsengumi.

He despises his fellow Vice-Chief, Sakata Gintoki, as much as he does the 1st Division Captain, Okita Sougo. He will likely never understand why Kondo-san brought in a former Joi rebel and a man with zero persistence to serve in such a role. Probably.
