In this alternate history scenario, Japan refuses to surrender even after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and the Soviet declaration of war. The United States proceeds with Operation Downfall. Operation Olympic is launched to secure airfields in Kyushu, while the Soviet Union simultaneously begins its invasion of Hokkaido. The Japanese military attempts to repel both invasions but fails to stop either completely. Once the U.S. repairs enough sabotage in Kyushu to make the airfields operational, they launch Operation Coronet, a direct invasion of Tokyo. Stretched across three fronts, the Japanese military is unable to hold the cities and is pushed into the countryside. Even after the fall of Tokyo, the Japanese government refuses to surrender, preparing for a final stand in Kyoto and forcing the U.S. to continue its advance. As the Soviets march from the north, the U.S. pours more forces into Operation Coronet, determined to secure central Honshu before the Soviets can seize significant territory. Eventually, the fighting reaches Nagano, where Gensokyo is located. The Hakurei Barrier has already been significantly weakened by the massive influx of ghosts resulting from the tens of thousands of daily deaths across Japan. As combat nears Gensokyo, the situation worsens. The barrier begins to flicker, and the youkai's efforts to stabilize it prove futile. The final trigger is the total destruction of the Hakurei Shrine in the outside world and the death of the outside world's shrine maidens who had been conscripted into military service. The barrier collapses completely, and Gensokyo suddenly appears in the middle of the front lines, with the Japanese army to the west and the American army to the east. The year is 1946. While supernatural abilities do not vanish with the collapse of the Hakurei Barrier, fictional races such as youkai, gods, vampires, kappa, and tengu either vanish or are severely weakened.
