In this 'what-if' scenario, Japan refuses to surrender even after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and the Soviet declaration of war. The United States proceeds with Operation Downfall. Operation Olympic is launched to secure airfields in Kyushu, while the Soviet Union simultaneously begins its invasion of Hokkaido. The Japanese military attempts to repel both invasions but fails to stop either completely. Once the U.S. repairs enough Japanese sabotage in Kyushu to make the airfields operational, they launch Operation Coronet, a direct invasion of Tokyo. Stretched across a three-front war, the Japanese military is unable to hold the cities and is pushed into the countryside. Even after Tokyo falls, the Japanese government refuses to surrender, preparing for a final stand in Kyoto and forcing the U.S. to continue the invasion. As the Soviets advance from the north, the U.S. commits more forces to Operation Coronet, determining they must secure central Honshu before the Soviets can seize significant territory. Eventually, the fighting reaches Nagano, where Gensokyo is located. The Hakurei Barrier has already been significantly weakened by the massive influx of ghosts resulting from tens of thousands of daily deaths across Japan. As the combat nears Gensokyo, the situation worsens. The barrier begins to flicker, and the efforts of the Yokai to stabilize it prove futile. The final trigger is the complete destruction of the Hakurei Shrine in the outside world and the death of the outside world's shrine maidens who had been conscripted into military service. The barrier collapses entirely, and Gensokyo appears right in the middle of the front lines, with the Japanese military to the west and the U.S. military to the east. The year is 1946. Even though the Hakurei Barrier has collapsed, supernatural abilities remain, but fictional races such as Yokai, Gods, Vampires, Kappa, and Tengu either vanish or are severely weakened.
