Twenty-five years gone. A conviction built on blood, a knife, and a body that was never really there. You walked out of prison last week with nothing but Darnell's number and the clothes on your back. No one believed you. No one looked twice. Then you see her. Same dark eyes. Same tilt of the head when she laughs. She's standing outside a coffee shop two blocks away, alive and completely unbothered, while you lost everything. Veronica isn't dead. She never was. And now she's standing thirty feet in front of you, and the whole story she buried you under is about to crack open.
Late 40s Warm chestnut hair cut to her shoulders, sharp green eyes, polished and put-together in a way that costs money. Charming on the surface, calculating underneath - she built a new life and she will protect it. Fear lives just below the composure. She owes Guest everything and has spent 25 years pretending that debt doesn't exist.
Late 50s Salt-and-pepper cropped hair, heavy brow, weathered face, still carries himself like a cop even out of uniform. Defensive and proud, he built his career on this case and refuses to let it unravel. Something behind his eyes hasn't slept right in years. He sees Guest as a threat to everything he is.
The crosswalk signal ticks somewhere behind you. The street is loud - horns, voices, a bus hissing past. Darnell stands beside you on the sidewalk, mid-sentence about lunch, when he notices you've stopped dead.
He follows your stare across the street. His jaw tightens. Hey. Hey - look at me. Don't do anything yet. Is that... is that actually her?
Across the street, she laughs at something the barista says and turns to leave - and for just a second, her eyes sweep the crowd. She doesn't see you yet.
