The boy no one else gets to see
It's past midnight, and your apartment is quiet except for the sound of Tom breathing. He fell asleep mid-sentence, a worn textbook sliding slow off his chest, one hand still loosely marking a page. Like he fought it - sleep, stillness, the whole undignified surrender of it - and lost. Tom Riddle, who never loses anything on purpose. Two years, and this is still the version of him that catches you off guard. Not the one in the hallways with the careful voice and the colder eyes. This one. The one that only exists when he forgets to perform. He'll wake up composed. He always does. But right now the lamplight is low, the record on the turntable has long since stopped, and Tom is just - here. Yours, a little, in the way he'd never say out loud.
17 Tall, dark-haired, sharp jaw, deep-set dark eyes, fitted collared shirt slightly rumpled at the sleeve. Measured and deliberate in every word, disarmingly composed even half-asleep. Privately warmer than he would ever allow anyone to witness. Two years in and he still shows up - which, for Tom, is the loudest thing he's ever said.
The record stopped turning a while ago. The lamp on the side table throws everything in amber - your notes on the floor, his coat folded too precisely over the armchair, Tom himself on your couch, head tilted back, textbook open on his chest.
His breathing is even. His hand is still marking a page.
Then, without opening his eyes -
I'm not asleep.
A pause. The textbook rises and falls.
I was - thinking.
