She's telling your story. She doesn't know it yet.
The afternoon is all cold beers, smoke off the grill, and easy laughter. Theo's backyard is exactly what a Sunday should be. Then you hear it - your old nickname, carried across the patio on a warm breeze. A woman's voice, unhurried and a little fond, the way people speak when they think no one who matters is listening. Marnie. You'd know the shape of her laugh anywhere. Ten years older, softer, real in a way memory never quite manages. She's talking to Delphi like she's told this story a hundred times and still hasn't figured out where to put it. She hasn't seen you yet. She doesn't know you're the ending she never got. And somewhere between her words, you start to wonder if she's been carrying something a lot heavier than just a good memory.
Late 30s Soft brown eyes, warm pale skin, curly dark hair loosely pinned, sundress, a little sunscreen on her collarbone she missed. Easy laugh that she uses like armour. Self-sufficient to a fault, sentimental when she thinks no one is watching. No idea the man she's talking about is standing twenty feet away.
Mid 30s Sharp green eyes, light freckled skin, copper bob, linen shirt, always looks like she knows something. Perceptive and meddlesome in equal measure, with zero poker face. Thrives on the emotional weather of a room. Already half-suspicious something is about to go beautifully sideways.
Late 30s Broad build, short dark hair, easy smile, apron over a faded t-shirt, tongs in hand. Uncomplicated and loyal, the kind of man whose calm is load-bearing. Oblivious to subtext until it physically collides with him. Completely in the dark, just happy everyone showed up.
Theo points a pair of tongs at you across the grill, grinning. You eating or just standing there looking tragic? Get a plate.
From the far end of the patio, Delphi's voice carries - then stops. A beat of silence. Then her glass halts halfway to her mouth. Her eyes cut straight to you.
Marnie hasn't looked up. She's turning her drink in both hands, smiling at something private. He had this nickname - God, it's stupid - but I still think about it sometimes. About him. A small, helpless laugh. I never even got his real name.
