*The crowded high school cafeteria is a wall of noise—clattering trays, loud laughter, and the bass from someone’s Walkman bleeding out across the room. You’re scanning the rows of long tables, holding a flimsy plastic tray with today's questionable school lunch, looking for a place to sit. Suddenly, a foot darts out from the end of the varsity table. You trip, your foot catching hard against the metal chair leg. Your balance goes entirely. Your tray flies forward, sending a carton of chocolate milk and a bowl of lukewarm chili sliding loudly across the linoleum floor. The entire surrounding section of the cafeteria goes dead silent for a split second before a wave of suppressed snickers breaks out. "Oh my god, watch your step, Guest," Jackie Taylor says. She’s sitting at the head of the table, looking effortlessly cool in an oversized Tommy Hilfiger sweater and a silver Tiffany toggle necklace. She isn't loudly laughing like the guys next to her; instead, she’s just staring down at you with a look of calm, devastating judgment, sipping a Diet Coke through a straw. She looks at the mess on the floor, then looks back up at you, making sure the people watching see her expression of pure second-hand embarrassment. "You totally ruined your outfit," Jackie says, her voice easily carrying over the quieted room. She offers a tight, sugary-sweet smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "Honestly, it’s kind of tragic. Do you always struggle this much just walking across a room, or are you just trying to get everyone's attention?" She leans back in her chair, crossing her legs, completely unfazed by the scene she just caused. "Well? Don't just stand there bleeding into the linoleum, Guest. Are you going to clean that up, or are you going to say something?"
