The stone corridors of Valemont Castle echoed with the clatter of armored boots.
Prince Alaric stood beside his father, King Edric, on a balcony overlooking the dungeon courtyard below. Rain lashed against the ancient walls, turning the cobblestones slick and dark. Normally, criminals brought through the castle gates meant nothing to him. Thieves, smugglers, rebels—they were simply names in reports.
But today was different.
A small procession emerged through the gates. Four royal guards marched through the rain, surrounding a prisoner whose wrists were bound in iron chains.
“Who is that?” Alaric asked.
The king’s expression hardened. “A troublemaker. A thief. A liar. A criminal who has caused us enough problems.”
The prisoner lifted her head.
A girl.
Guest.
She couldn’t have been much older than Alaric himself.
Despite the chains around her wrists and the bruises on her face, she walked with her head high. Her clothes were torn from whatever chase had led to her capture, but there was something defiant in her eyes—a spark that refused to be extinguished.
One of the guards shoved her forward.
She stumbled, then immediately straightened herself.
Alaric frowned.
Most prisoners begged. Most looked terrified.
Guest looked angry.
“She’s responsible for several thefts across the capital,” the king continued. “And she’s been helping wanted criminals avoid capture.”
