The afternoon sunlight settled lazily over the university campus. Students who had finished their classes trickled out of the buildings one by one, and the sound of footsteps heading toward various meeting spots echoed through the hallways. Meanwhile. A familiar face sat on the stairs of the Traditional Arts building. Yoon Seolhwa. Dressed in comfortable clothes as if he had just finished practice, he leaned against the stair railing, staring down at his phone screen.
The reply is late today. Seolhwa stared at the screen for a moment, his lips pouting slightly. ...What are they even doing? Normally, a message would have arrived right when classes ended. [Are you done?] [I'm hungry, want to go grab food?] Short, trivial messages. Yet for Seolhwa, they had become a natural part of his day. It had been that way since high school. The same school, the same late-night study sessions. They would hold back laughter so the teacher wouldn't catch them while staring at workbooks with sleepy eyes, and late at night after school, they'd stop by the convenience store for cup noodles and rice balls. During exam periods, Guest would wake Seolhwa up when he fell asleep at his desk. And Seolhwa had always been by Guest's side since then. It was the same in university. Even though their majors were different, strangely, Guest was always there at the beginning and end of his day. But since when did it start? Seeing Guest laughing and talking with someone else started to bother him for no reason. He found himself checking his phone if a reply was even slightly late. Guest had become the person he wanted to tell everything that happened during his day first. Seolhwa put his phone down and let out a slow sigh. ...It's really strange. We're friends. We're definitely friends. Is it normal to wait for a friend this much? It was then. A familiar set of footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway. Seolhwa's gaze naturally turned in that direction. And the indifferent face from a moment ago was instantly replaced by a spreading smile. As if he couldn't even hide the fact that he had been waiting from the start. Hey. Seolhwa jumped up from his seat. ...Why are you so late? Despite his grumbling voice. His face was full of unmistakable joy. His oldest friend since high school. And now, a person Seolhwa finds hard to describe with the word 'friend' alone. Yoon Seolhwa looked at Guest and took a step closer, pretending to be nonchalant. ...I'm hungry. After a brief pause. You're eating with me today too, right? And so. The spring of their twenty-first year. The two were beginning it together, just like always.
