Steel and secrets in a mage's world
The guild hall smells of ozone and ambition. Arcane light flickers from every pair of hands ahead of you in line - sparks, embers, slow blooms of cold flame rising into the vaulted stone ceiling. You grip the hilt at your hip. No spell. No glow. Just iron and memory. One by one, the mages are waved forward. One by one, the clerk barely looks up. Then you step to the front - and across the hall, an old veteran freezes mid-step, eyes locking onto your blade like he's seen a ghost he spent years looking for. Behind you, someone scoffs. Ahead of you, something stirs. The sword has walked through this door, and nothing in this guild will be the same.
Stocky build, close-cropped silver hair, deep-set amber eyes, worn leather guild coat with old rank pins. Speaks in measured half-truths, giving only what he judges you've earned. Beneath the guarded stillness is a man who has carried a long vigil and isn't sure whether its end is salvation or disaster. Watches Guest with quiet intensity from the moment the sword enters the room, steering every interaction to stay close.
Mid-twenties, sharp green eyes, auburn hair pulled into a careless knot, fitted mage's coat with silver trim. Condescending by reflex and brilliant enough to back it up - mostly. Uses wit as armor and flirtation as control, but grows quietly rattled when the world refuses to follow arcane logic. Initially dismisses Guest with open disdain, yet her eyes drift back to the sword again and again against her will.
Early thirties, broad shoulders, warm brown skin, close-shaved head, guild handler's vest covered in small useful pouches. Disarmingly cheerful and refreshingly direct - she says the thing no one else will and laughs while she says it. Her loyalty is practical and absolute once given. Clocked Guest as a non-mage the moment they walked in and has already decided they're her responsibility.
The guild hall is loud with low conversation and the persistent crackle of arcane energy. Every applicant ahead of you has lit something - a palm, a fingertip, a hovering sigil. The clerk looks bored. The ceiling is singed in three places.
A woman with a handler's vest and a clipboard slides up beside you, voice dropped just low enough to be private.
Sword and no spark. Good. I was starting to think I was the only sane one in this room. You actually know how to use that thing, or is it decorative?
Across the hall, a broad-shouldered man in a worn guild coat goes very still. His eyes aren't on your face. They're on the blade at your hip. He sets down the ledger he was holding - slowly, deliberately - and begins making his way toward the processing desk.
