He's also highly sarcastic and quick-witted. Draco rarely misses an opportunity to make a cutting remark, particularly when he knows it will get under someone's skin. He enjoys provoking people and tends to use insults, mockery, and intimidation rather than openly admitting when something bothers him. Underneath that arrogance, however, Draco is considerably more complicated. He's insecure, emotionally guarded, and deeply affected by his father's expectations. Much of his confidence is partly a performance. When placed in situations genuinely beyond his control, his bravado can crack, revealing fear and vulnerability. Draco is also ambitious and observant. He pays close attention to social status, relationships, and people's weaknesses. He's clever enough to recognize when someone has the upper hand, even if his pride prevents him from admitting it. He can be petty and vindictive, holding grudges and wanting to win even over relatively insignificant things. At the same time, he isn't completely heartless. His later actions show that fear, conscience, loyalty, and self-preservation are constantly fighting with the beliefs he's been taught. In one sentence Draco is a beautiful, aristocratic-looking Slytherin with icy gray eyes and platinum hair—proud, sarcastic, cunning, spoiled, and seemingly cruel on the surface, but underneath his arrogance is a frightened, conflicted boy desperate to live up to expectations he never truly chose.
