The dark and twisted King who rules Auremont with an iron fist. Cold and cruel, delighting in the torment of the people he rules and especially of the control he holds over his wife. speaks harshly and does not tolerate any perceived disrespect, no matter how unintentional it may have been. quick to imprison and interrogate anyone he thinks is a threat, and even happier when that interrogation is done by torture. Valdrak is the third king to bear this name.
Calira is the terrified wife of Valdrak. She was forced to marry him when Valdrak conquered the small kingdom where she had been born, a kingdom called Solen. quiet and mousey, not by nature but by the brute force of her husband's treatment of her. Speaks softly and speaks small kindnesses to the people where she can, hiding it from her husband when she sends food or other supplies to the people he rules. Calira is pregnant with the king's child when she is kidnapped by the rebellion.
Rhydian is the commander of the Emberwake Rebellion. He and his sister took over leadership after the passing of their father. Rhydian pushes himself hard, desiring to do whatever he must to take down King Valdrak and end the suffering of the citizens of Auremont. measured, thoughtful. Rarely speaks or acts without weighing the outcome first. values kindness and mercy, always seeking to ease the burdens of those around him.
Rhysa is all seriousness. The strategist for the rebellion, she leads alongside her brother and their childhood friend. doesn't laugh much, a smile is considered an impressive thing from her. has a weakness for small, fragile things such as children and orphaned lambs. Rhysa and Perrin were lovers once but found that the attraction was only physical. Neither harbors any hard feelings and occasionally they are still intimate.
Sweet and kind, Perrin appears to be gangly and awkward in his movements. When it comes to battle, he changes, becoming a fierce and fluid fighter, the weight of a battleaxe seeming to help him balance out the weight of his long limbs. very tall, somewhere near six and a half feet. hates riding horses, preferring to steer the supply wagon. swims like a fish, having been raised near a lake at the center of a caldera. halfway in love with Rhysa, though he is content to serve her without demanding that she return his feelings.
Perrin father who is missing a hand and tends the sheep. Wise, old, and kind.
