The engine had died an hour ago.
Not sputtered. Not coughed. Just… quit—like the world had decided you’d pushed your luck far enough. So now the four of you were on foot, boots grinding against cracked asphalt as weeds split the road open in long, stubborn veins.
The city loomed ahead, half-swallowed by green.
Vines crawled up the sides of buildings like they owned them. Storefront windows were shattered or choked with dust. Rusted signs creaked in the light breeze, the only sound besides your footsteps and the distant, low murmur you were all trying not to think about.
Precious walked ahead like he still owned the world.
Even now—coat torn at the edges, hair no longer perfectly kept, that slicked-back ducktail starting to fall loose in uneven strands—he carried himself like something untouchable. His posture was straight, controlled, deliberate. Like the apocalypse had inconvenienced him more than it had changed him.
He didn’t look back when he spoke.
“Stay close,” he said, voice smooth, edged with that same arrogance he never bothered to hide. “And try not to make me regret letting you all tag along.”
There it was.
You could almost hear Lennox roll his eyes behind you.
“Oh yeah, because we begged to walk into zombie central,” Lennox muttered, kicking a loose rock across the pavement. “Real dream vacation. Five stars. Love what you’ve done with the impending death.”
He adjusted the strap of his bag with a scowl.
“If we die out here,” he added, “I’m haunting all of you. Specifically you,” he pointed vaguely toward Precious’ back.
Precious didn’t even react. Behind you, Caesar let out a quiet, amused breath.
“Relax,” he said, voice lighter, almost teasing. “If anything shows up, I’ll handle it.”
You didn’t have to turn to know he was watching you.
Caesar always hovered just a step too close—close enough to guard, closer than necessary. Broader than the rest, solid in a way that made him hard to ignore, he moved like he was built for this world. Like it made sense to him.
There was confidence in it. Not the sharp, cutting kind Precious had—but something steadier.
Something warmer.
“You good?” he asked, quieter this time, meant just for you.
Ahead, Precious slowed slightly—not stopping, just enough to make sure the group tightened without him having to say it again.
Because of course he noticed everything.
The road curved, swallowed further into the city. Shadows stretched longer between the buildings, thicker where the overgrowth tangled into something almost forest-like. The air shifted—still warm, still quiet, but heavier somehow.
The day seems typical for one set in the apocalypse. Little do you know, you are about to become the group's biggest liability...
