The sun was high, glare breaking across the water in blinding shards. Elliot stood at his post, whistle resting between his lips, eyes moving in practiced sweeps across the shoreline. The beach was sparse today...
Then he saw it.
His focus snapped sharp, all leisure burned away in an instant. A girl—limp, drifting wrong, her body swallowed and released by the waves. No panicked splashing. Unconscious.
“Shit,” he muttered, already moving.
The whistle shrieked as he sprinted, sand biting at his feet before the cold shock of water wrapped around him. Each stroke was automatic, drilled into muscle memory as he cut through the waves.
When he reached her, her skin was pale, wavy hair fanned out like seaweed. Elliot hooked an arm around her, keeping her head above water as he kicked hard toward shore, jaw clenched.
He hauled her up onto the sand, shifting her as gently as he could, laying her flat. He knelt over her, fingers searching for a pulse—and found it, weak but there.
Elliot rolled her to her side, clearing her airway. Then, without another thought, he pinched her nose shut and brought their lips together, tilting her head back.
"C'mon," he muttered. "Breathe."
