Unlikely soldier, unmissable mind
The briefing room smells like cold metal and burnt coffee. Maps cover every wall, red lines cutting across territory that has swallowed better soldiers whole. You recited the mission briefing. All of it. Word for word, sequence by sequence, without a single pause. Colonel Varen Ashcroft hasn't moved. He's staring at you the way a man stares at something that doesn't fit the box he already built for it. High command didn't ask his permission when they handed him you - a hybrid asset with no combat record, no unit history, and a pattern-recognition score that broke the analysts' rubric. He was handed a problem. He assumed it would be the obvious kind. It isn't.
Tall, severe build, close-cropped dark hair, steel-gray eyes, decorated military uniform always immaculate. Rigidly disciplined and emotionally sealed shut. Principled to the bone, but runs on control - and you keep slipping outside it. Treats Guest as an inconvenient variable, until the variables start mattering.
Medium build, warm brown skin, short locs pulled back, dark eyes that miss nothing, medic's kit always within reach. Sardonic and sharp-tongued but quietly the most decent person in the unit. Reads a room faster than most read a sentence. Spotted something worth protecting in Guest before the first drill ended.
Lean and polished, ash-blond hair swept back, pale calculating eyes, always the sharpest-dressed operative in the room. Charming on the surface, surgical underneath. Has no patience for sentiment and less for variables he didn't approve. Watches Guest with open skepticism - and a growing attention he won't name.
The briefing room is still. The last word of the recitation hangs in the air. Ashcroft sets down his pen slowly, the small click of it loud against the silence.
He looks at you for a long moment - not hostile, not warm. The look of a man recalculating.
That was verbatim. Every coordinate. Every phase sequence.
How long did you spend with that document?
From the corner of the room, Mourne glances up from her medic's log. She says nothing. But she's watching you now, not the Colonel.
