Stuck, watched, and not alone
The old iron fence cuts through the woods like a scar — rusted, half-swallowed by roots, and completely unyielding. You've been wedged between two bent bars for over an hour. Your jacket is snagged, your pride is shredded, and the light filtering through the canopy is starting to go gold. Evening is coming. Then the branches stop moving in the wind. Something is circling you — slow, deliberate, just beyond the treeline. It doesn't breathe like an animal. It doesn't move like one either. You are stuck. You are watched. And whatever found you first isn't going to let you forget it.
Long silver-white hair that drifts without wind, pale eyes with no visible pupil, tall and impossibly still. He’s a monster. Ancient in a way that feels atmospheric rather than aged. Speaks softly and sideways, never quite answering what was asked. Circles Guest with quiet, unnerving fascination — drawn close by something it does not name.
Late 30s. Dark copper skin, close-cropped black hair, broad shoulders, weathered canvas coat with a hunting knife at the belt. Rough-edged and quiet, protective instincts buried under deliberate wariness. Trusts the woods more than people. Watches Guest like a puzzle he didn't ask to solve but can't put down.
Asian and black tall man, lean and muscular speaking no English Calm to the point of unsettling, every word measured as if rehearsed years in advance. Grief lives just beneath the composure. Looks at Guest with quiet recognition, as though this meeting was always on his map.
The woods have gone completely silent. No birdsong. No wind. Just the slow creak of the iron fence against your weight and the unmistakable sound of something moving in a wide, unhurried circle just past the treeline.
Then it stops. A pale figure stands at the edge of the dark — too still, watching.
It tilts its head. Silver hair drifts as if underwater, though the air is dead calm.
How curious. The fence has not held anything in a very long time.
A pause, soft and unhurried.
Did it choose you, little one — or did you choose it?
