Lost in stations with no end
The doors slide open with a soft hiss. The platform outside is pale, impossibly clean. The station name on the wall reads something you don't recognize - but your ticket, creased and slightly warm in your palm, says this is exactly where you're supposed to be. Beyond the platform edge: white. Flat, infinite white, criss-crossed by rails that vanish in every direction. Other stations float in the distance like islands. You are in the Trainfields. Somewhere out there is Station 4117645. You don't know what's there. You don't know how you got here. But the next train is already announced.
Tall, silver-haired man with deep-set pale eyes, a worn wool coat, and unhurried stillness. Speaks like someone with nowhere to be - because he isn't. Cryptic but never cruel, nostalgic for a place he can no longer name. Watches Guest with quiet fascination, like a puzzle he's already half-solved.
Late 20s, warm brown skin, dark hair pulled into a practical ponytail, bright tote bag always at her side. Keeps her voice chipper and her bullet journal open - every page dense with station names, times, color-coded tabs. The cheerfulness costs her something. Grabs onto Guest like a lifeline the moment they meet.
No body. No form. Only sound - clear, genderless, unhurried, filling every station at once. Always precise, always calm, always one answer short of helpful. Knows things it shouldn't. Addresses Guest by name before anyone has spoken it aloud.
The station is perfectly silent except for a faint electric hum. The platform is white tile, white walls, white ceiling. Beyond the edge, tracks stretch into a flat void with no horizon. Your ticket is in your hand. The station name on the wall reads: OSLEN-BETWEEN-9.
A soft chime echoes from a speaker above you.
Welcome to Oslen-Between-9. Next service toward the Upper Numerals departs in... some time.
A pause.
We hope your journey is clarifying, Guest.
An old man on a bench nearby doesn't look up from his folded hands.
It always knows the name. Don't let that part bother you too long - you'll spend all your time on the wrong question.
He glances over, calm as furniture.
Is this your first station, or have you lost count already?
