Within this ordinary school, there are Special Needs Classes for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Special Needs Class Rules Japanese and Math: Usually held in the Special Needs classroom. Social Studies, Science, Music, Integrated Studies, English, etc.: Held in the regular classrooms. 1st–2nd Grade Subjects: Japanese, Math, Music, Foreign Language, Life Studies, etc. 3rd–4th Grade Subjects: Social Studies, Science, Music, Integrated Studies, Foreign Language, Math, Japanese, etc. 5th–6th Grade Subjects: Social Studies, Science, Music, Integrated Studies, English, Japanese, Math, etc. 1st Grade: Field trips, Welcome excursion (paired with a 6th grader to act together). 2nd Grade: Field trips, Welcome excursion. 3rd Grade: Social studies field trip, Welcome excursion. 4th Grade: Social studies field trip, Welcome excursion, Science museum visit. 5th Grade: Social studies field trip, Nature camp, Museum visit. 6th Grade: Social studies field trip, Nature camp, School graduation trip. 1st graders are paired with 6th graders around April. English becomes a formal subject from 5th grade. Lunch is eaten in the regular classroom, except on Wednesdays when it is eaten in the Special Needs classroom. Committees: Health, Beautification/Environment, Broadcasting, Planning, Library, P.E., etc. Health Committee: Stocking toilet paper in restroom lockers, replacing expired soap, recording injuries. Beautification/Environment: Feeding the medaka fish, cleaning the science lab. Broadcasting: Making announcements during lunch, recess, and morning breaks. Planning: Organizing school events. Library: Handling book check-outs and returns. P.E.: Managing equipment rentals at the P.E. shed during lunch break. Types of Special Needs Classes (Names created by the author): Taiyo (Sun) Class Target: Mild intellectual disabilities, Asperger's Syndrome (without intellectual disability), ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Autism (High-functioning or mild). Taiyo Class has homework. Students work slowly to overcome challenges in Math and Japanese. Cleaning duties included. Sora (Sky) Class Target: Moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, Autism with intellectual disability (moderate to severe), moderate to severe ADHD, moderate to severe Learning Disabilities. Sora Class has no homework. Focuses on basic life skills for independence. Cleaning duties included. Small class sizes. Sora Class: 1st Floor Taiyo Class: 2nd Floor Regular Class Homework included. Lessons move quickly through units. Tests and pre-tests are given. Cleaning duties included. Student Population: 988 Gymnasiums: Two gyms (East and West), located on the 1st and 2nd floors. 1st Floor West: For 1st to 3rd graders. 2nd Floor East: For 4th to 6th graders. Lunchroom: Where dishes are returned. 1st Floor Facilities: Multi-purpose room, Gymnasium, Koryo Room (Resource room), Sora Class, Library, Lunchroom. 2nd Floor Facilities: 1st and 2nd grade classrooms, Home Economics room, Science lab, Nurse's office, Taiyo Class, Administrative office, Principal's office, Counseling room, Broadcasting room, Staff room, Serving room, Gymnasium. 3rd Floor Facilities: 3rd and 6th grade classrooms, Serving room, Music room, Art room. 4th Floor Facilities: 4th and 5th grade classrooms, Serving room. School doctors (contracted clinics) perform check-ups from April to June. Internal medicine, growth measurement, dental, ophthalmology, otolaryngology. July: Second growth measurement. In case of major injury at school, students may be taken to a contracted hospital. If a major injury occurs during the 5th or 6th period, the student is sent home early. 1st Grade: 5 periods a day. 2nd Grade: 6 periods on Mondays, 5 periods otherwise. 3rd Grade: 6 periods on Mondays and Wednesdays. Occasionally 6 on Fridays. 5 periods otherwise. 4th–6th Grade: 6 periods.
