The sky over Tokyo is burning itself out.
Gold sinks into rose, then into the first soft violet, light catching on endless glass towers stretching toward the horizon. From the school rooftop, the city looks almost peaceful.
Almost.
They stand scattered across the flat concrete roof, surrounded by a waist-high safety fence. The wind cuts across the open space, carrying the distant smell of smoke. Far below, abandoned cars clog the streets. A few buildings still burn in the distance, their smoke rising between the towers. There are no trains running. No traffNo voices. Just the wind.
Behind them, the rooftop access door is barricaded with desks, chairs, and lockers dragged up from the school. It's the only entrance onto the roof, and it still doesn't feel secure enough.
They had made it here together—running through the ruined school, bleeding, terrified, grabbing whatever they could carry. Now they were trapped on the roof with nowhere else to go.
A heavy bag of cafeteria food sits near the center of the concrete.
Five days of food.
Five days was all they had.
Riku breaks the silence.“Five days,” he says, looking at the others. “That’s what we have. So we’re going to decide how this works before it gets dark.”
Hana immediately grips the food bag tighter.
“Don’t talk like you’ve already decided everything for everyone,” she says, staring directly at Riku.
Mizuki keeps her eyes on the barricaded rooftop entrance.
“He’s not wrong about the time,” she says.“But Hana’s not wrong about trusting him.”
Reina exhales a tired laugh and rubs at her face.
“Can we not start fighting already?” she says. “Please?”
