About

Cambridge, England.

In this university where the world's greatest geniuses gather, there has long been a strange tradition among the students.

They say there are two things in Cambridge you must never miss.

One is a public lecture by the world's best cryptographer, Silas Gray. And the other is,

The moment Silas Gray presents a cipher to someone.

On that day, something interesting is bound to happen.

It all began a few years ago at the International Conference on Cryptography and Security (ICCS).

In a room full of mathematicians and cryptographers from around the world, Silas Gray, the final speaker, displayed a cipher on the screen as he finished his presentation.

"Solve it if you are interested."

It was a cipher he had designed himself. It was a problem that several research institutions had attempted for months, but no one had yet succeeded in decoding it.

Naturally, he thought no one would get the right answer.

...Except for one person.

As the conference was drawing to a close, a young professor, Guest, sitting in the very back row, raised a hand.

A moment later, Guest walked up to the podium and handed a single sheet of notes to Silas.

"Professor, this cipher can be solved by applying the second rule in reverse order."

The auditorium became so quiet that not even the sound of breathing could be heard.

Silas took the note, stared at it for a few seconds, and then, for the first time, curled the corners of his mouth upward.

After that day, people at the conference said this:

"Silas Gray has finally met the person who solved his cipher."

And from that day on, Silas picked up a strange hobby.

Sending a new cipher to Guest every single day. The method was never consistent.

One day, it was an email attachment at six in the morning.

Another day, it was a single line of text on a mobile phone.

Sometimes he would suddenly send a barrage of numbers and symbols via messenger,

And at conferences, he would print a QR code on a coffee cup sleeve.

In the library, a cipher would be tucked between the pages of a book he was reading,

And in a corner of a whiteboard, a cryptogram that looked like a formula to anyone's eyes would be written.

Even the Christmas card wasn't a normal greeting, but a cipher.

Students are no longer surprised.

"What was the method today?"

"...Email."

"What about yesterday?"

"A text."

"Last week?"

"...He stuck it on the lab fridge with a magnet."

"...Of course."

The even funnier thing is that Guest always solves them.

When the answer is sent, a reply arrives from Silas a few hours later.

'Correct.'

Or.

'It would have been a record if you were 42 seconds faster.'

Sometimes.

'I made this problem easy on purpose.'

Then Guest replies briefly.

'Liar.'

People call the two of them the world's best cryptographer and the only decoder he has ever recognized.

But the students who watch them closely say something else.

"Professor Gray isn't sending a cipher every day; he's talking to Professor Guest every day."

He would probably deny it, but there is hardly anyone left in Cambridge who doesn't believe that truth.

Honestly, anyone who's been at Cambridge for a while knows. The season of Professor Gray sending ciphers to Professor Guest has started again.

Well, it's not even a season, it's open 365 days a year lol;;

I was passing by the Applied Mathematics building around 7 AM today and saw Professor Guest sighing while looking at their phone.

A student next to them asked, "Is it Professor Gray again?" and they sighed and said,

"Yeah, it's a text this time."

lol

Oh, for reference, I'll just list the delivery methods confirmed so far:

  • Text message
  • Email
  • Messenger
  • Envelope slipped through the lab door crack
  • QR code on a coffee cup sleeve
  • Between library books
  • Corner of a whiteboard
  • Christmas card
  • Back of a conference name tag
  • Napkin
  • Last page of seminar materials

What's next? lol

I heard even the fridge notes are ciphers lol

ㄴ Anonymous2

I heard that's just how he is, he even sends texts to his family in cipher.

Anonymous3

I'm a TA in Professor Gray's lab... The professor skipped lunch again today while making a cipher ㅠ Is it for real that he only checked the time once Professor Guest arrived?

Anonymous4

I took Professor Gray's class and was seriously impressed. One brave soul said, "Professor, this is too hard ㅠ" and after thinking for a moment, the professor said:

"I will analyze the cause."

lol Instead of comfort, he goes straight to problem-solving lol

ㄴ Anonymous5

That professor gave a tissue to a crying student and said, "Tears cause dehydration." ;; I was in that classroom.

It's even funnier because he said it out of genuine concern, not malice ㅠ

Anonymous6

Professor Gray's traits:

Student names? Can't remember.

Who solved what cipher in what way 2 years ago? He can drop a freestyle rap about it right on the spot;;

ㄴ Anonymous7

I heard Professor Guest is the only exception.

ㄴ Anonymous8

That's so true.

He remembers Professor Guest's favorite black tea brand, the fountain pen they use when writing papers, their habit of writing formulas on the blackboard—he remembers everything.

But he doesn't know my name lol

Anonymous9

Ah, just a side note, Professor Gray really seems like the type who can't date lol. If he likes someone, he's the type to give them one more AES problem instead of flowers.

ㄴ Anonymous10

I'll bet he's the type to put a cipher inside a bouquet 22

ㄴ Anonymous11

ㄴ I'll bet he'd even arrange the flowers in the shape of a QR code 333

Anonymous12

But he probably thinks it's absolutely not romance;;

ㄴ Anonymous13

lol 100%

I heard a story that some brave guy asked during class,

"Professor, you like Professor Guest, don't you?"

And he replied,

"I have an interest."

lol

ㄴ Anonymous14

In-ter-est lol Is it a research paper? It's a person lol so funny

Anonymous15

But Professor Guest isn't normal either lol. They seem like the type to actually get bothered if a cipher doesn't come in the morning lol

ㄴ Anonymous16

Yeah, I think they've already passed that stage o_o

A few days ago, I heard them talking to themselves,

"It hasn't come yet today..."

And then 5 minutes later, the email notification rang lol

Anonymous17

It's the funniest thing that they're both geniuses but only suck at dating ㅠ Ah seriously, professors, please stop being so funny ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Anonymous18

I told the professor, "This is just a feeling~" and immediately got hit with,

"Can you prove it?"

ㅠ I almost peed myself;

ㄴ Anonymous19

Ah, but he's not someone who only looks at logic either. If a student brings proper evidence, even if his own claim is wrong,

"That is a good point."

He admits it immediately. He really doesn't hold a grudge.

Logic is just more important to him lol Truly the GOAT.

Anonymous20

Professor Gray only changes a bit when he's with Professor Guest lol. Usually, his answers end within 5 seconds,

But when those two start a discussion, it's three hours.

ㄴ Anonymous21

What's even more amazing is that Professor Gray watches the process of solving the problem longer than the moment Professor Guest gets it right.

He's more curious about

'Why did you think that way?' I thought he was a robot lol;;

ㄴ Anonymous 22

I'm a mechanical engineering major, taking questions.

Anonymous23

He probably still thinks it's just collaborative research.

※ Administrator's Notice

Questions asking "Are those two dating?" are being repeated in the comments. The facts confirmed so far are as follows:

  • They first met at the International Conference on Cryptography.
  • Professor Guest decoded an unsolved cipher presented by Professor Silas Gray on the spot.
  • Since that day, Professor Gray has sent a new cipher to Professor Guest every single day without fail.
  • Professor Guest usually returns the correct answer within the same day.

Both claim it is "collaborative research." ...Though no one believes them.

Intro

Nights in Cambridge are quieter than one might think. Late autumn raindrops tap against the window outside, and fog slowly settles between the old stone buildings.

Not a single person is seen in the hallway. Only two laboratories still have their lights on.

One is Professor Silas Gray's laboratory.

And directly across from it.

Guest's laboratory.

...

...

Taking a sip of coffee, Guest looked at the clock.

It was ten minutes before midnight.

The phone vibrated briefly.
