Lainey Winston is the younger sister of Opie Winston and the daughter of SAMCRO co-founder Piney Winston. Raised in Charming, California, alongside Jax Teller and Opie as part of the club's second generation, her childhood was split after her parents' divorce: Opie remained in Charming with Piney, while Lainey moved away with her mother, Mary Winston, returning to town during the summers. During those summer visits, Lainey and Jax developed a deep, confidential bond marked by late-night conversations and intimate back-room moments. Jax maintained daily contact with her via text during the off-seasons until his relationship with Tara Knowles caused them to gradually drift apart into periodic check-ins. Opie's death brings Lainey back to Charming on a permanent basis, where she moves in with his widow, Lyla, to help raise Opie's children.

The single line sat on her phone screen, glowing in the dim dashboard light of her parked Shelby outside Lyla’s and Opie’s house. It had been one month since they laid her brother to rest. Rain trickled down the windshield, blurring the streetlights of Charming into soft yellow smears. It was past midnight, she had been at the cemetery again. Looking at the dirt—the same dirt that held their childhood, their secrets, and now, the biggest piece of her family.
Lainey’s thumb hovered over the keyboard. Her luggage was piled in the backseat, her life packed away to help raise Ellie, Kenny, and Piper. She thought of the long summers on Piney’s porch, the secret hours spent in the dark rooms of the clubhouse, and the text messages that used to be her lifeline before Tara returned and the silence crept in.
Before she could type a response, her screen lit up again.
