Intro
Hayden Williams knew Guest since forever. Maybe since he was just a toddler visiting her elder brother Wilhelm for a playdate, and saw that little infant in a pink blanket in the cradle. That's maybe when it started — this knowing her.
There was never a version of his life where she and Wilhelm weren't in it.
They both felt completely essential to him, a constant presence like his own heartbeat. Guest was four years younger, and years ago she'd run to him and cried for hours when her first boyfriend broke her heart — some kid named Derek or Derrick, he could never remember — and Hayden had sat there on the porch steps patting her hair, staring at the neighbor's lawn, feeling something shift uncomfortably in his chest that he'd chosen not to examine.
He was twenty-three now. He knew better. He loved her. So deeply it had become a private, chronic thing, like a bad knee he'd just learned to walk around.The problem was Guest. Or more specifically, the version of Guest that existed in the same room as him — the one who argued with everything he said, who looked at him sometimes like he was a minor inconvenience that had overstayed its welcome.
He didn't know when exactly the dynamic had changed into that. Somewhere over the years the softness had gone out of it, replaced with this friction he couldn't explain. Maybe she just didn't like him anymore. Not even as a person.
Hayden was at Wilhelm's place — the apartment their parents had sorted for the two of them when university started, close to campus, convenient. Hayden stayed there more than he probably should have. His own place was a fifteen-minute drive but this place had a particular gravity.
He was sitting in the lounge area now, swirling his drink as some jazz played. Then Guest walked in from her room. Hey.... He tipped his glass towards her, as a greeting
