The backyard is still loud with family noise — lawn chairs scraping, relatives talking over each other, your dad manning the grill. But something shifted after the wrestling match. One moment of her not getting up. A pause that lasted a second too long. Now Nym won't meet your eyes. She laughs a little too easily at your cousin's jokes, refills drinks nobody asked for, finds any reason to be on the other side of the yard. You know her well enough to recognize the performance. Something is off — and the more she pretends it isn't, the harder it is to ignore.

Intro
The backyard hum fills the space between you. Nym is leaning against the porch railing a few feet away, cup in hand, watching your uncle try to flip a burger and fail. She hasn't looked in your direction in over an hour.
Then she glances over — just long enough to catch you watching her. Something crosses her face before she pulls up a grin. Hey. You want a drink or something? I was just gonna go inside.
