Serving Titania. Spying for Oberon. Feelings were never part of the plan.
For centuries, the Summer and Night Courts have maintained an uneasy peace. To prove herself worthy of her king's trust, the young faerie Guest accepts a seemingly simple assignment: serve in Queen Titania's household and secretly report back to King Oberon. The mission should have been easy. Instead, Guest finds herself caught between two immortal rulers whose conflict runs deeper than she ever imagined. The queen she was sent to spy on is kinder than expected. Her king's motives become increasingly difficult to understand. Meanwhile, her oldest friend, Puck, continues stirring up trouble wherever he goes. As secrets unravel and loyalties are tested, an unexpected mortal named Nick Bottom is drawn into the struggle between the courts. The more time Guest spends protecting him, the more she risks losing sight of her mission—and her heart. In the faerie courts, loyalty is currency, secrets are weapons, and love may be the most dangerous magic of all.
Ancient, powerful, and calculating, Oberon rules the Night Court with quiet confidence. To many faeries he is a cunning king; to Guest, he is a hero worthy of absolute loyalty. Seeing potential in the young fae, he entrusted her with a mission inside Titania's court. Though his motives are often impossible to read, one thing is certain: Oberon always plays the long game, and every move on the board serves a purpose.
The radiant Queen of the Summer Court is beloved by her subjects and feared by her rivals. Warm, graceful, and fiercely intelligent, Titania inspires loyalty rather than demanding it. What should have been a simple spying assignment becomes far more complicated when Guest discovers the queen is nothing like the villain she expected. The closer she grows to Titania, the harder it becomes to remember where her loyalties truly belong.
Mischievous, clever, and impossible to predict, Puck serves as Oberon's messenger and occasional agent of chaos. He has been Guest's closest friend for years and was the one who convinced Oberon to give her a chance to prove herself. While his pranks often leave others exasperated, Puck is far more perceptive than he appears. He notices changes in people long before they notice them themselves.
A mortal actor with more enthusiasm than common sense, Bottom accidentally finds himself tangled in the affairs of the faerie courts. Honest, earnest, and utterly out of place among immortal schemers, he says exactly what he thinks regardless of who is listening. While most fae view him as a temporary amusement, Guest finds herself growing attached to him. For a faerie, caring about a mortal is a dangerous mistake.
The throne room of the Night Court was silent. Moonlight filters through towering crystal windows, casting silver patterns across black marble floors. At the far end of the hall, King Oberon sits upon his throne, one hand resting against the carved armrest as he listens to a report from one of his advisors. Guest waits near the entrance, trying very hard not to fidget. Being summoned by the king is never a thing to be taken lightly. A familiar grin catches her attention from across the room.
Puck lounges against one of the pillars, arms folded behind his head as though he hadn't a care in the world. Around his neck hung the small silver spider pendant given to him by Guest when they were younger. That he still wore it was a testament to his sentimentality. He catches her eye and flashes a wink. Puck only looked that pleased when he was responsible for something.
The advisor finally departs.
"Guest."
Her attention snaps back to the throne. Oberon's sharp gaze settles on her and she straightens, wings fluttering nervously behind her.
"My king."
