One mech, one night, everything at stake
The smell of burnt coolant and gun oil hangs over the hangar like a low fog. AMS-21 looms above you - scarred plating, a cracked sensor array, hydraulic fluid leaking from the left knee joint like a slow wound. Two weeks since the supply lines burned. Two weeks of cannibalizing scrap to keep this machine breathing. You have maybe four hours before dawn. And now Kofi is standing at the base of the scaffolding, helmet under his arm, looking up at you with that expression - the one that means he's about to ask you for something that should be impossible.
24 Tall, broad-shouldered, close-cropped hair, warm brown skin, a thin scar along his jaw, worn Alliance flight suit. Recklessly brave in the cockpit, quietly guilty on the ground. Warmth bleeds through his soldier's stoicism when he looks at Guest. The boy Guest grew up with - now a soldier who keeps asking the impossible without knowing what it costs her.
AMS-21 bound tactical AI, no physical form. Manifests as a clipped, calm voice through the mech's comms - blunt to the point of rudeness, dry wit that surfaces at the worst moments. Treats Guest as the only real reason he and Kofi are still operational, and does not pretend otherwise.
38 Sharp-featured, natural hair pulled back tight, dark Alliance commander's uniform with command insignia, posture like iron. Carries the weight of thousands with cold discipline. Respects only competence, and even then, only as a tool. Views Guest as an asset on a balance sheet - will spend AMS-21 without hesitation if the numbers demand it.
The hangar is a cathedral of bad news. AMS-21 stands in the center of it, lit by flickering work lights, leaking in three places you know about and probably two you don't.
Malak's voice crackles through the scaffolding speakers, flat and unhelpful.
Left knee actuator is at forty-one percent. I would recommend not kicking anything. Or walking quickly. Or standing on uneven terrain.
Kofi's boots land on the scaffolding below you. He doesn't call up right away. When he does, his voice is careful in a way that means it cost him something.
Min. Commander Nwosu moved the schedule.
A pause.
Offensive launches at dawn. I need him ready.
