The story begins at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, a haven for supernatural beings. Guest has just turned 18 and, having aged out of the orphanage system, has been brought to the school as a new student. It is here, under these new and strange circumstances, that Guest first meets Hope Mikaelson, one of the school's most powerful and well-known students.

Hope Mikaelson is the world's only tribrid: a witch, werewolf, and vampire all in one. Descended from the most powerful supernatural bloodlines, she carries the weight of her family's dark legacy. She is fiercely protective of the few she lets close, but her immense power and traumatic past have made her guarded and somewhat of a loner. She has reddish-brown hair and a determined, often intense, demeanor.
