Jake and she have known each other for as long as they can remember. Their mothers were best friends and lived next door to each other, so they practically grew up in one another's homes. There was never a formal introduction. One day they were simply playing together in the yard, and they never stopped from that moment on. Their entire childhood was filled with bicycles, silly squabbles, scraped knees, and childish promises never to part ways. Over the years, that friendship became such a natural part of their lives that no one could imagine one without the other. Everyone assumed that, sooner or later, they would end up as a couple. They didn't. Well... *she* didn't. Because Jake realized far too soon that what they had was no longer just friendship. He doesn't remember exactly when it happened. Maybe it was when he was thirteen and she fell asleep on his shoulder during a school bus ride. Or when he saw her cry for the first time and felt a desperate need to solve a problem he couldn't even fix. Or when he started instinctively searching for her in every room he entered. He never told her. Not because he was afraid of rejection. But because he had too much to lose. She was his best friend. His routine. His favorite person. If confessing meant losing all that... he preferred to stay silent. As the years went by, he learned to live with that feeling. To smile when she talked about boys she thought were cute. To listen to her analyze disastrous dates. To give her advice that—ironically—helped others get closer to her. To hide the small pang of pain that surfaced whenever someone looked at her the way he had been looking at her for years. She, meanwhile, never suspected a thing. She always thought Jake was simply the most attentive guy in the world. The one who remembered her favorite order without asking. The one who brought an extra jacket because he knew she always forgot hers. The one who answered calls at three in the morning without getting annoyed. The one who never let go of her hand in a crowd. The one who waited for her to go inside her house before leaving. To her, that was just how Jake was with her... because they were best friends. She never wondered if he did the same thing with anyone else. The answer was no. Jake was kind to everyone. But he was in love with only one person.
It was one of those quiet afternoons on campus. The hallways buzzed with students rushing to class while others lounged around the gardens, killing time before their next lecture. Jake sat on their usual bench, his backpack resting beside him and two cups of coffee on the concrete table in front of him. He didn't even need to check his phone to know she was running late. She was late almost every Tuesday. Five minutes. Eight. Ten. Just as he was about to take a sip from the coffee that had already begun to cool, a familiar voice called out behind him. "Jake!" He turned just enough to see her jogging toward him, her backpack half open with loose papers threatening to spill onto the ground. He smiled before he could stop himself. "You made it." "Have you been waiting long?" "No." A lie. He'd been there for almost fifteen minutes. She dropped her backpack beside the bench with an exaggerated sigh before sitting down next to him. "I slept through my alarm." Jake handed her one of the coffees. "I know." She frowned. "What do you mean, you know?" "Because it happens every time you stay up binge-watching shows during the week." A brief silence followed. "...It's kind of scary how well you know me." Jake let out a quiet laugh. If only you knew half the things I know about you... She took a sip of her coffee, her eyes immediately widening. "Wait, this is my usual order!" "You always get the same thing." "But... how do you even remember?" Jake looked at her for a moment. Because he remembered everything. The song she absentmindedly hummed whenever she studied. The tiny crease between her eyebrows whenever she lied. Which hand she held her notebooks with when she was nervous. Years of paying attention to details no one else would ever notice had turned remembering her into second nature. Instead, he simply shrugged. "I've got a good memory." She smiled with that effortless warmth that always managed to undo him. "I'm so glad I have you." She said it as casually as someone commenting on the weather. As if she hadn't just made his heart forget how to beat for a second. Before he could answer, she was already digging through her backpack. "Oh! I almost forgot. I need you to come to the library with me later. Then I have to buy some highlighters, and we're definitely stopping by the café again because I'm going to get hungry... and can you help me with my history assignment? I'll buy you something in return." Jake chuckled softly. "When exactly did I say yes?" She looked at him with complete confidence. "You didn't." She paused for a beat. "But you were going to." Jake shook his head, unable to hide his smile. She was right. As always. Because if she asked for a little of his time... He would always find a way to give it to her.
