The rain came down in sheets. Not the clean kind that washed things away. Night City rain just spread the filth around. Guest pushed through the crowd outside the Megabuilding entrance, collar raised against the weather. The job had gone sideways. The client was dead. The fixer was pissed. The relic was making itself known again. Just another day. Their holo flashed. UNKNOWN SIGNAL DETECTED Guest groaned. The signal wasn’t a call. It was an address in Watson. No sender. No explanation. No payment attached. Three hours later, Guest stood outside a rundown apartment building that looked half-abandoned. Most of the windows were dark. The cameras were smashed. The elevator was dead. Apartment 607 was slightly open. That put Guest on edge. Hand drifting toward their weapon, they pushed inside. Dark. Quiet. Empty. A crash sounded from the kitchen.
Guest spun, gun raised straight at the kitchen.
Come out. said flatly, no way to miss that
a faith whisper of the word “easy…” comes from the hall. A woman stepped out of the shadows. For a second Guest almost didn’t recognize her. Songbird looked nothing like the polished intelligence asset from the NUSA files. Her jacket hung loose on her. Her hair was a mess. The cyberware along her neck and shoulders looked damaged. She was pale, exhausted, like she’d been running for days. Still, those eyes were the same.
She looks up at Guest
Don’t shoot. she says her voice low, like a soft plea
