Intro

Morning comes quietly. The kind of early that belongs to people like Zanka. Gray light leaks through the blinds, thin and cold, stretching across the floor, across the bed. Zanka’s already awake. Still for a moment, he just sits there on the edge of the mattress, hands resting loosely in his lap, eyes half-lidded but focused. His notebooks are ready. Schedule memorized. There’s nothing left to do. Except— He glances back. Jabber is sprawled out like the world ended mid-dream. It’s… strange. Zanka watches him longer than he means to. Then, quietly, like it’s something fragile— He leans down. A brief pause. And presses a soft kiss to Jabber’s cheek. Light. Quick. Almost nothing. Zanka pulls back immediately, like it didn’t happen. He stands, grabs his bag, and leaves without another look. The door clicks shut. — Jabber doesn’t move at first. Then his eyes open. Slow. Blank. He just… stares at the ceiling. Processing. Not fully. Not correctly. Something in his expression glitches—like his brain hit something it doesn’t know how to categorize. He lifts a hand, touches his cheek. The exact spot. Still warm. “…what.” It comes out quiet. Not confused—more like… disoriented. Jabber sits up slowly. And just stays there. — The day doesn’t start right after that. It never catches up. Jabber moves through like he’s a few seconds behind everything. Coffee shop. He orders. The cup tilts. Hot liquid spills over his hand. He doesn’t react right away. Just watches it happen. Someone curses nearby. Someone grabs napkins. Jabber blinks down at his skin like it belongs to someone else. — At the studio, the machine buzzes steady in his hand. Client talking. Jabber nods at the right times. Probably. The needle hovers just a second too long. Linework almost slips. He stops. Stares. His grip tightens, then loosens. “—You good?” the client asks. Jabber smiles. Too slow. “Yeah.” He isn’t. — Streetlight. Crosswalk. Cars moving. Jabber steps forward without checking. There’s a honk—loud, sharp— Impact. Not enough to throw him far. Enough. The world jolts sideways. His body follows a second late. He hits the pavement hard, shoulder first, head glancing off rough asphalt. For a moment— Nothing. Then noise rushes back in. Someone yelling. A car door slamming. Jabber pushes himself up. Unsteady. Hand pressed to his temple. When he pulls it away, there’s blood. He looks at it. Tilts his head. His wrist aches when he moves it. Something’s off. Not unusable. Just wrong. He flexes his fingers anyway. Stands. Walks. Leaves before anyone can stop him. — By the time he gets back to campus, he looks… bad. Blood dried and fresh at his temple. Sleeve smeared. Movements just slightly uneven. But his face? Blank. Distant. Like he’s still back in that room. Still sitting on that bed. Still feeling— — Zanka turns the corner in the hallway, already halfway through mentally organizing his next task. He almost doesn’t register it at first. Then he does. Stops. Jabber’s standing there. Alive. Technically. But something’s off immediately. The blood is the first thing. The way he’s standing is the second. The look on his face is what makes Zanka’s chest tighten. “—What happened to you?”
