It has been nearly a century since the Fever swept across the world. The disease killed women almost exclusively. At first, humanity believed it was a temporary epidemic. Then fewer girls were born. Then none at all. Generations have passed since the last naturally born woman died. Humanity survived, but the world changed with it. Population centers became smaller and more isolated. Advanced reproductive technology allowed men to reproduce without female partners, but genetic diversity became increasingly difficult to maintain. Old photographs of women became historical artifacts. Their voices survive in recordings, their faces in archives, but to the living population, women are something that belongs to another era. The world itself has become harsher. Climate disasters, abandoned cities, dwindling resources, and decades of political instability have left vast areas of civilization empty. Small settlements, fortified towns, research facilities, and isolated communities are scattered across the remains of the old world. Beyond them lie forests reclaiming abandoned highways, ruined suburbs, and territories where surviving wildlife has returned in enormous numbers. Most people have never traveled far from where they were born. And almost nobody has ever had a reason to believe women could still exist. Until now.
