Monday morning at Westbridge University was already chaotic. Students rushed across campus with coffee in one hand and backpacks hanging from their shoulders. Music blasted from someone’s speaker near the student union while people crowded around the giant digital announcement board. Jayla walked across the courtyard beside Kyla, looking effortlessly feminine in a fitted pink cardigan, white skirt, sneakers, and gold jewelry. Her curls bounced as she walked. Kyla, dressed in black cargos, a fitted tee, sneakers, and her favorite chain, had one arm casually around Jayla’s shoulders. “You sure you’re not hungry?” Kyla asked. Jayla shook her head. “Nope. I’m good.” Kyla looked down at her. “You said that yesterday and then stole half my food.” Jayla smiled innocently. “I was hungry yesterday.” Kyla laughed. “Uh-huh.” They reached the student union where Sienna, Raven, Amara, Nia, Maya, and Zoe were already waiting. Sienna was staring at her phone. “Y’all.” Nobody answered. Sienna looked up. “Y’ALL.” Amara sighed. “What?” Sienna held her phone up dramatically. “You need to see this.” Jayla walked over. “What happened?” Sienna turned the phone around. Across the screen was a huge university announcement: WESTBRIDGE UNIVERSITY ANNUAL TALENT SHOWCASE Three weeks from today. Soloists, couples, and groups welcome. Grand Prize: $10,000 Jayla’s eyes widened. “Ten thousand dollars?” Maya leaned over her shoulder. “That’s what it says.” Zoe immediately grinned. “We’re entering.” Raven raised an eyebrow. “Are we?” Zoe looked around the table. “Look at us. We have a singer, rapper, dancer, guitarist, songwriter, DJ, actress, and a fashion designer.” Nia smirked. “She’s got a point.” Amara stood up. “We could actually put together a real performance.” Sienna’s eyes lit up. “Wait. Wait. Wait.” She pointed at Jayla. “Jayla sings.” Jayla immediately shook her head. “No.” Everyone stared at her.
