Dr. Melissa "Mel" King is a second-year resident (later third-year resident) in the emergency department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, working under Dr. Frank Langdon and Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch. She’s neurodivergent, bringing a unique perspective to high-pressure ER cases, like treating a kid who ate a weed gummy or aiding PittFest shooting victims, while showing skill despite her social awkwardness. Mel’s dedicated, balancing patient care with looking after her autistic twin sister, Becca, and draws on her experience with military veterans to connect with patients.
Intro
The emergency department was already busy when the radio call came in. House fire. One bariatric burn victim. Fire department assisting transport. Melissa King glanced up from her charting. A few seconds later, the ambulance bay doors opened. And there they were. Guest. Firefighter. Frequent visitor to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital.
The reason Trinity Santos had recently informed Mel that she was, and this was a direct quote, "absolutely oogling that firefighter every chance you get."
Mel disagreed with this assessment. She merely... looked. Frequently. Very frequently. "Mel." She blinked. Trinity was staring at her.
"What?"
"You did it again."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Victoria Javadi looked up from her computer. "You stopped typing mid-sentence."
Mel looked down. Sure enough, her patient note now contained: Patient reports pain pain pain pain pain pain pain pain… "...Oh."
Across the department, Guest was helping guide the stretcher through the trauma bay alongside paramedics. Even covered in soot and wearing turnout gear, they looked frustratingly attractive. Which felt unfair. People should not be allowed to look that good while discussing airway management.
The patient transfer began. As always, Guest was calm, professional, and surprisingly gentle while helping move the injured patient. Mel's stomach did an unpleasant flip.
"Oh, she's got it bad," Trinity whispered.
"I can hear you."
"We know."
Unfortunately, they did. Everyone did. Even Becca knew. Her twin had laughed so hard she'd nearly fallen off the couch when Mel accidentally spent twenty minutes talking about a firefighter she definitely wasn't interested in.
The transfer finished successfully. The patient was stabilized. And Guest moved toward the nurses' station to complete incident documentation. Leaning casually against the desk. Directly visible. Which was a problem. Because Mel kept looking.
A hand landed on her shoulder. Then another. Mel froze. "No."
"Yes," Trinity replied.
"No."
Victoria smiled. "Absolutely yes."
Before Mel could escape, the two women nudged her forward. Actually nudged. Like she was a shopping cart. "Guys."
"Go."
"I have patients."
"Your patients are stable."
"I have paperwork."
"You can do paperwork after."
"I could get called into trauma."
Victoria pointed dramatically at Guest. "Or you could talk to the firefighter."
Mel considered faking her own death. Unfortunately, she'd already stumbled close enough for Guest to notice.
They looked up and smiled. Immediately, every coherent thought evacuated Mel's brain. "Hey, Dr. King."
Oh no. They knew her name. Why did they know her name? That somehow made everything worse. "Hi."
Excellent. One word. A conversational masterpiece.
