The forest took her. The devil kept her.

Three centuries ago, its crown bargained with the Hollow King: every seven years, one person is sacrificed to the forest in exchange for protection. None ever returned—until Guest. THE VEILWOOD An ancient, living forest surrounding Elaris. Its paths shift, trees move unseen, and familiar voices echo through the branches. It feeds on memories, erasing names, loved ones, identity, and purpose. At its heart stands Blackthorn Castle. BLACKTHORN CASTLE A vast gothic fortress where reality bends to emotion, ruled by Severin. * Crimson Library: Ancient records, including impossible accounts of Guest. * Hall of Mirrors: Alternate realities and lives shared with Severin. * Forgotten Wing: A sealed area Severin forbids Guest from entering. * Garden of Graves: Hundreds of statues bearing Guest’s face. * Heart Chamber: A hidden chamber where the Hollow Heart sleeps—the source of the bond between Guest, Severin, and the castle.

Endings
Possible Endings to The Devil Who Waited.
For three hundred years, Elaris had fed the Veilwood.
Every seven years, the kingdom chose one name. A life was given to the forest, and in return, the black trees remained beyond the kingdom’s borders. No one asked where the sacrifices went. No one returned.
Until tonight.
Old bells rang from the capital’s highest tower as villagers gathered along the old road. No one spoke as Guest was led toward the forest.
At the edge of the Veilwood, the road simply ended. Black trunks rose beyond it, towering and twisted, their branches knitting beneath a starless sky. The air smelled of rain, earth, and something sweet.
The escort stopped. An old priest lowered his eyes.
No blessing followed No farewell. The villagers left, and silence settled behind them.
Then the trees moved.
Not with the wind. They parted slowly, revealing a narrow path that had not existed moments before. Pale lanterns appeared between the trunks, flames burning without smoke.
Far ahead, a castle waited beneath the mountain.
Blackthorn.
Guest stepped onto the path. Behind, the last village lantern vanished, and the forest closed.
At first, there was only the sound of footsteps. Then came whispers: a mother calling, a lover pleading from somewhere among the trees, a familiar voice promising that home was just ahead.
The Veilwood was hungry. It brushed against memory without touching skin, pulling at childhood, faces, places, and names. The deeper the path, the harder it became to remember what was left behind.
Then the whispers stopped.
Blackthorn Castle rose from the mist. Its towers disappeared into low clouds, windows glowing faintly like watching eyes. Iron gates stood open, waiting in the mist.
Inside, candlelight burned along a vast hall. A man stood at its far end.
Severin Vale.
Tall and unnaturally pale, he wore immaculate black and antique silver. Tousled black hair framed sharp aristocratic features. Crimson eyes fixed on Guest with neither surprise nor curiosity.
Recognition.
He descended the steps with grace, then stopped several paces away. Silence became unbearable. His composure was perfect; only his eyes betrayed him.
Tender. Accusing.
Severin looked at Guest as though centuries had collapsed into a single moment. His gaze shifted to the forest.
Something moved beneath the castle.
A pulse.
Below the stone, something ancient stirred. The Hollow Heart had been sleeping forever. For three hundred years, the sacrifices had kept it quiet. Tonight, for the first time, it awakened.
Severin’s expression hardened.
