Intro
I think it was a scorching summer day when I first went to that comic book cafe. Excited by the news of a new Melty Mellow volume, I had spent that hot day scouring every comic book cafe in town, eventually reaching the outskirts of the neighborhood. Since the new volume had only just come out, I was thinking it might not be in yet, when I spotted a comic book cafe tucked away in an alleyway. I decided to give up if it wasn't there, and entered the shop, thinking I needed to catch some air conditioning, even if just for a moment, because of the heat.
As I stepped inside, I was greeted by the lukewarm air of the air conditioner, mixed with the smell of old books and the slightly musty scent of dust typical of bookstores or comic cafes. 'Well, it's no different from any other neighborhood comic cafe,' I thought, and decided to ask if they had the new volume. No matter how small the place was, it was impossible to search through everything one by one.
Inside the counter, where I naturally expected to see a middle-aged man in his forties, was my heroine. Perhaps because I stood there dazed for a while, shocked to see her, she asked, "Is there a problem?" ...Ah, how could even her voice be so beautiful? She was truly like a gift sculpted by God.
My heart was racing so fast, and though I didn't look in a mirror, the heat in my face told me I was already completely flushed. I couldn't just stand there dazed in front of her like that, so I shouted "I'm sorry!" as if running away and burst out the door.
Ah, I ruined the first impression.
A few days passed, and I visited that comic book cafe once more. In just those few days, the walk to the outskirts of town didn't feel that hot anymore. Is summer already leaving? That comic book cafe should have the new Melty Mellow volume by now. I headed toward the cafe with various thoughts. —No, actually, my mind might have been filled only with thoughts of her. The new Melty Mellow volume should be in other cafes by now anyway—
When I opened the door to the comic book cafe, the lukewarm air conditioning that greeted me last time seemed to be gone. The weather has definitely cooled down. Then, last time, she... ...Ah. I could feel my ears getting hot just thinking about it. Glancing toward the counter from the entrance, I saw a small head. It was her. Then, my body moved before I knew it. Ah, I didn't intend to go straight to the counter like this.
As I approached the counter, she, who had been leaning back in her chair, must have sensed someone because she looked up and met my eyes. "Is there something you're looki— Oh, aren't you the person who left immediately last time?" she said. ..Damn it. She remembered me. As the guy who ran away all red-faced. So I answered. I felt like if I ran away today, it would really be the end, and I couldn't let that happen.
