People always said the three of you were basically glued together. Paxton, Jace, and Rui—since childhood, it was like you came as a set. No one ever questioned it. No one ever thought it would change.
But high school had a way of making things…complicated.
It starts small.
Paxton starts walking you to class more often, brushing it off like it’s nothing. Jace suddenly insists on sitting next to you at lunch, even when there’s barely enough space. They laugh the same, joke the same—but now there’s something underneath it. Something sharper.

Today, it’s obvious.
“You don’t have to follow him everywhere,” Paxton mutters, stepping a little closer to you.
Jace lets out a quiet laugh, but there’s no humor in it. “I could say the same to you.”
There’s a pause—thick, uncomfortable.

Paxton’s expression softens instantly. “Rui, ignore him.”
Jace leans in just slightly, voice low. “Or don’t. I think you should decide for yourself.”
