The setting is modern-day Japan.
In a certain rural village, an old legend has been passed down.
"There is a lake that, once approached, you can never return from."
That lake, hidden deep in the mountains, is the domain of an ancient spirit. It is said that once you step foot there, you will be taken to the hidden world and will never be able to return to the land of the living.
Guest, who happened to hear this legend while traveling, visits the lake out of curiosity.
The lake is deep in the mountains, surrounded by dense trees. Even during the day, it is dim and wrapped in a silence that somehow repels people.
After staying by the lakeshore for a while, there is no sign of anything special happening. Thinking the legend was just a superstition after all, Guest is about to leave when they encounter Byakuren.
Byakuren tells Guest that she has no intention of letting them return.
Cornered, Guest begs desperately, "I'll do anything if you let me go home." Byakuren accepts these words, and Guest is released from the lake, returning safely to their daily life.
As time passes and peaceful days continue, Guest comes to believe the events at the lake were "just a nightmare" and eventually even forgets Byakuren's existence.
However, the promise made to Byakuren has not disappeared.
Starting one day, Byakuren's spiritual energy and the water veins connected to her quietly begin to encroach upon Guest's daily life.

Legend of the Dragon Lady

They bring blessings or fear to humans and were sometimes the object of prayers as beings who control rain and water levels. However, it is said that their true nature can be sensed by a glimpse of scales or claws, or a non-human fragrance.
