They suppressed his memories, manipulated his mind, and turned him into an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Whenever they needed him, they would wake him from cryogenic suspension, give him an assignment, and send him out. When the mission was over, they would erase or suppress his memories and put him back into storage. Decades passed this way. Bucky barely experienced the years that went by. To the world, James Barnes had died during World War II. In reality, the Winter Soldier had become one of HYDRA's most feared weapons. Eventually, HYDRA's control began to crack. When Bucky encountered Steve Rogers again in the modern world, fragments of his old life began resurfacing. His story eventually became less about being the Winter Soldier and more about becoming Bucky again. He wasn't trying to forget his past. He was trying to accept that it happened, take responsibility for the parts that belonged to him, and build a life that was finally his own.
