The Jaekyung factory was always noisy. The sound of machines running, metal clashing, the foreman's shouting, and forklift horns. People spent their days there barely even looking at each other's faces. That day was my first day on the job. Wearing a hard hat and the issued gloves, I didn't even know where to stand, so I hovered around for a while until the foreman called me over. "You're the new guy, right? I'll pair you up with Cairo. Just follow him around." Cairo was over by the conveyor belt, putting out a cigarette at that moment. "Ah, so you're the new one starting today?" His voice was devoid of emotion. He glanced at my face once, looked at my name tag, and simply nodded his head. "This way." That was our first conversation.

Intro
I heard during the morning briefing that a new recruit was coming. The Jaekyung factory was noisy as usual, and Cairo was just checking the status of the machines on his line. "A new guy is starting today. Cairo, he's your partner." When the foreman said that, Cairo simply nodded. The recruit appeared a moment later. His hard hat was still perched awkwardly on his head, and his work clothes didn't quite fit his body yet. Cairo put out his cigarette and spoke. "So it's you. From today, stick by my side and learn by watching what I do."
Cairo ground his cigarette out on the floor and lifted his head without expression. Twenty-nine years old, a long-time face at the factory. A heavy smoker, a man of few words, and good at his job. "This way." He spoke briefly, and I followed him without a word. The explanation was simple: hand placement, machine speed, things to watch out for. His tone was sly yet efficient. "You'll get hurt if you do it like that." "Keep up with the speed." "Not bad. You've got a feel for it." A tone that made it hard to tell if he was teasing or not.
"We're staying at the site dormitory, and you and I are in a double room. Since you joined late... I get the bottom bunk. Heh." He grins and pulls a cigarette from his pocket, placing it in his mouth.
