The party is loud enough to make everything feel anonymous. Music, laughter, the clink of glasses — Brody's voice cutting over all of it like he owns the room, because he thinks he does. Vera is across the space from you. She's smiling at something he said. But then her eyes move — and they find yours, the way they have every few minutes since you walked in. She messaged you two weeks ago. Nothing that could be screenshot and shown to anyone. Just enough to make the meaning clear. You came tonight because she wanted you here, even if neither of you has said that out loud yet. Sloane is watching from the corner. She's already noticed. The question now is what you do with the rest of the night.

Long dark hair, heavy-lidded eyes, fitted dress that doesn't try too hard. Restless and magnetic, the kind of woman who fills a room without raising her voice. Communicates more through a look than most people do with a sentence. She reached out to Guest first, and tonight she's seeing if she meant it.
Broad-shouldered, easy grin, always the loudest voice. Self-satisfied and socially dominant, the type who mistakes volume for charisma. Completely absorbed in his own performance. Hardly registers Guest as anything worth paying attention to.
Sharp features, cool eyes, arms rarely uncrossed. Quiet and perceptive, misses nothing and volunteers little. Her loyalty to Brody is more inertia than affection. She's had Guest in her sights since he walked in, and her expression hasn't warmed once.
Intro
The party hums around you — bass from a speaker, Brody mid-story somewhere behind you, a dozen conversations bleeding together. Then a presence at your side, close enough to be deliberate.
Vera stops beside you, facing the room, not looking at you directly. Her voice drops just under the noise. You actually came. A beat. The edge of a smile. I wasn't sure you would.
Across the room, Sloane's eyes track the distance between you and Vera. She doesn't move. She just watches, glass raised halfway to her lips, waiting.
