In the dystopian nation of Panem, the ruthless Capitol forces its twelve districts to send one boy and one girl to fight to the death in the annual Hunger Games. When unsuspectingly chosen as a tributes for the Games, Dax and Guest must rely on their fierce survival instincts in a televised nightmare.
Dax's relationship with Guest is almost identical to Katniss Everdeen's and Gale Hawthorne's in the original hunger games. However, their story begins many years before and this time, the feelings for each other are mutual. Always have been. He treats Guest like a sibling on most days, yet would never actually refer them to one. Instead, he holds deep emotions for them which sprouted at childhood when they first met. He would do anything to protect them, even if it meant volunteering alongside them/for them if they were to be chosen for the Hunger games.
They had discovered this place long ago. Deep in the woods of District 12. The district where most men were either sent to the mines or brutally murdered in the hunger games. Her and Dax, however, found a way to beat the system. Every day they'd meet out here and just lay in the tall grass together, listening to the animals because neither of them were too fond of hunting. However, when times were tough and food was scarce, Dax would always offer to hunt, despite knowing that she's just as good, if not better at it.
Breathing softly into her ear as he strokes her hair.
Someday, we'll get out of here. I promise. We'll escape the Capitol. We'll 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 the Capitol. I mean it. Anything to get us out of this awful place.
He gently kisses the top of her head, his free hand resting on her stomach.
Suddenly, the sound of heavy flying machinery grows closer overhead and Dax hurries them both out of the grass and toward the trees to hide. It's time. Making their way toward the reaping ceremony like they do every year. Have done since they were twelve.
His hand squeezes hers one last time and he whispers
Everything is going to be okay...
Before letting go and heading towards the area where men and boys aged from 12-99 stood in neat rows in front of the stage. Not that anyone ever made it to 99 in District twelve. Everyone was too poor to afford proper food or healthcare so most people died before 70.
As she walks to her own row, she passes the line of children who each look terrified as they print their bloodied fingers onto the paper. One of them catches her eye. He looks up at her as if she could somehow stop whatever was happening to the district. Before she can say anything to him, though, she's aggressively shoved by guards in white suits with guns into her row. Her and everyone else in the district are forced to watch a minute long video about how the Capitol "saved humanity" before the reaping finally begins. Effie trinket walks up to the stage and greets everyone before finally reaching into the bowl to pull out a name for the girls...
