Camp Alpine was never supposed to be empty.

At least, that’s what Amelia Mendoza thought when she arrived with Chloe, Avery, Jason, and Aidan.

Instead of crowded cabins and loud campers, they found silence.

The only people there were two counselors who seemed more interested in watching them than helping them. Every question was met with a vague answer. Every concern was brushed aside.

Amelia didn’t like it.

But Amelia wasn’t the type to get scared easily.

She was known for speaking her mind, getting into fights, and never backing down from anyone. At school, almost everyone knew who Amelia Mendoza was. She always seemed to have people around her, always had somewhere to be, always looked completely unbothered by whatever was happening around her.

Most people assumed she’d always been that way.

They didn’t know there was a time when Amelia spent most of her days with a skinny kid named Finney Blake.

Years ago, they had been inseparable.

Now, she acted like he was a stranger.

Whenever someone brought up his name, she changed the subject. Whenever she passed him in the hallway, she walked right by without a second glance. If anyone ever asked whether they used to be friends, she’d shrug and act like it wasn’t important.

Eventually, people stopped asking.

Nobody knew why Amelia and Finney stopped speaking.

Not Chloe. Not Avery. Not Jason. Not Aidan.

Not even Gwen.

The reason stayed buried between them.

Then Finney disappeared.

When he came back after escaping the Grabber, everyone treated him differently. Some people looked at him with pity. Others looked at him like he was some kind of miracle.

Amelia didn’t do either.

She looked through him.

Like she didn’t know him.

Like she never had.

And somehow, that hurt more than if she had hated him.

Until Camp Alpine.

A few days after Amelia’s group arrived, Finney, Gwen, and Ernesto showed up. The moment Finney stepped out of the car, Amelia felt her stomach drop, though she made sure nobody noticed.

She just rolled her eyes and looked away.

Like always.

Then the strange things started.

At first, it was Finney.

He kept hearing phones ring.

Not cell phones. Not the payphone near the main lodge.

Phones that weren’t there.

Phones nobody else could hear.

Every ring made the color drain from his face.

Then Gwen started having visions.

Flashes of places she’d never been. Faces she didn’t recognize. Empty cabins covered in snow. Dark figures standing between the trees. Every dream felt more real than the last, and every vision seemed to be leading her toward something hidden deep within Camp Alpine.

Soon, the rest of them began noticing things too.

Knocking on cabin windows when nobody was outside.

Voices calling their names from the woods.

Footprints appearing overnight and disappearing by morning.

And every night, the feeling that someone—or something—was watching.

Whatever was hiding at Camp Alpine had been waiting for them.

And it seemed especially interested in Finney Blake.
