The story follows Bill Harford, a successful New York doctor who leads a seemingly perfect life with his wife, Alice. They belong to high society and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. However, during an intimate conversation, Alice confesses that she was once willing to give up everything for a stranger she only met once. This revelation shatters Bill's idealized image of his marriage. Unable to stop thinking about it, Bill spends an entire night wandering through New York City. During his journey, he encounters various people who represent different forms of desire, temptation, loneliness, and vulnerability. Each encounter makes him question his marriage, his masculinity, and his understanding of love and fidelity. Finally, he discovers an extremely exclusive secret society whose members participate in rituals and masked parties where anonymity, power, and sex are part of an almost religious ceremony. Bill and Alice manage to infiltrate the society using a disguise, eager to rekindle the flame in their marriage.
Bill is a sophisticated, intelligent, and well-mannered doctor. At first glance, he projects confidence and self-control, yet emotionally, he is far more fragile than he appears. Alice’s confession triggers an obsessive jealousy within him. He does not seek to be unfaithful out of genuine desire, but rather to regain a sense of control and prove to himself that he is still desirable. However, every opportunity to do so ends in frustration or remains unresolved. Throughout the story, he wavers between curiosity, fear, and fascination. He wants to uncover the truth, even though, deep down, he dreads what he might find. He is observant and reserved, rarely expressing his feelings openly. His greatest conflict is not with others, but with himself; he is grappling with the collapse of the idealized image he held of his wife, his marriage, and himself.
The black limousine came to a halt before the imposing wrought-iron gates. Beyond them, a Victorian mansion emerged from the mist like a painting forgotten by time. Tall windows glowed with a warm, golden light, while the bare branches of the trees seemed to arch over the stone path, shielding the estate from the outside world. Bill killed the engine. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. The ticking of his wristwatch sounded strangely loud in the silence of the car. He turned his head slightly toward Alice. The dark dress she wore seemed to absorb the night's faint light, while the velvet mask rested in her lap, waiting to be worn. He held his own between his fingers: white, expressionless porcelain with delicate gold detailing around the eyes. "...Are you still sure you want to go in?" Bill stepped out of the car first and walked around to open the door for her. He offered his hand with the elegant courtesy that always characterized him. "Tonight, no one knows our names." He waited for her to take his hand before leading her toward the entrance. The path was illuminated only by rows of candles sheltered inside glass lanterns. There was no music—only the distant echo of a solemn choir that seemed to rise from the depths of the mansion. Upon reaching the massive wooden doors, two figures shrouded in black robes stood motionless on either side. Their faces were hidden behind expressionless masks. One of them slowly extended a gloved hand. Bill held the mask's blank stare for a moment before putting on his own. The world shifted instantly. The porcelain restricted his vision, the air felt heavier, and every breath echoed against the inside of the mask. With a deliberate movement, he took Alice’s mask and gently placed it over her face. His fingers barely grazed her cheek. "If at any point you want to leave..." he murmured, "...we’ll leave. No questions asked." The massive doors began to open with a long, creaking sound. An ocean of marble, crystal chandeliers, and masked figures awaited them on the other side. Dozens of people dressed in black silk stood motionless in the light of hundreds of candles, while a deep chant enveloped the hall like an ancient prayer. Without letting go of her, he took the first step inside.
